South African singer, Tyla has made history as the first-ever winner of the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys.

Tyla’s ‘Water’ defeated songs by Nigerian singers: Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush’ to clinch the award.

The 22-year-old has now become the youngest African to win a Grammy.

Meanwhile, Davido’s ‘Timeless’ and Burna Boy’s ‘I Told Them’ also lost the Best Global Music Album award to Shakti’s ‘This Moment.’

Similarly, Davido’s ‘Feel’ and Burna Boy’s ‘Alone’ lost the Best Global Music Performance to ‘Pashto’ by Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Zakir Hussain.

This means no Nigerian won an award at the 66th Grammys.

Grammy-nominated Nigerian singers, Davido and Ayra Starr, have congratulated their South African counterpart, Tyla for winning the maiden Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys.

However, the duo congratulated Tyla on her victory via their respective social media handles.

“Congratulations on your win @Tyllaaaaaaa ! Big One for Africa! Keep soaring!,” Davido wrote on his X page.

On her X handle on Monday morning, Ayra Starr wrote: “Congratulations to my babessssss @Tyllaaaaaaa.”

Tyla and Ayra Starr have previously collaborated on her hit song, ‘Girl Next Door.’

Ayra Starr stated in an interview days before the award ceremony that she had already prepared her Grammy acceptance speech.
