UNILEVER PARTNERS CUSTOMS ON EASE OF DOING BUSINESS

Multinational corporation selling consumer goods including foods, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products in Nigeria, Unilever Nigeria Plc, has strengthened its ties with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in its drive for ease of doing business.

This came as the Managing Director of the company, Mr. Yaw Nsarkoh and the Controller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali have extolled the new customs policy that allows consignees to remove their goods from the ports pending when disputes are resolved.

They also harped on the need for importers of raw materials and manufacturers in the country to take advantage of customs improved trade dispute mechanism which saves time and prevent losses to factories occasioned by delays.

The chief executives also agreed that Article 13 of World Trade Organisation charter which allows consignees to take delivery of imports while disputes are being resolved makes doing business easy

Ali who was represented by Patience Iferi, a Deputy Comptroller General of Customs in charge of Excise, Free Trade Zones and Incentives during an interactive session between both organisations in Lagos, reiterated customs resolve to ensure that consignments are not delayed in the ports as a way of facilitating trade.

The customs chief also noted the need for members of the business community to be acquainted with valuation procedures and processes and the imperatives of providing adequate information on components of their imports to customs for duty assessment.

Meanwhile, the managing director on Unilever, Mr. Yaw Nsarkoh has said that the interaction is significant, saying has helped to opened up both sides and allow them understand each other’s processes and work better.

In his own comment on the interaction, the Customs Controller General, said it is very necessary and a way for fostering existing ties between the Customs and Unilever.

The CGC said ‘’Trade can only develop on robust partnership, if we have good partnership with all our stakeholders it makes us improve on our services.

‘’We cannot achieve our aim of ensuring trade facilitation except we have this type of partnerships. Holding a forum like this has helped us to appreciate their challenges and make them realise that Nigeria Customs Service is out to help them succeed.

‘’We are focused on national security and economic development for the country. The management of Nigeria Customs Service sees a partner in Unilever,” he said.
