SUPER EAGLES STRIKER FEATURED ON CNN, TALKS GROWING UP IN LAGOS

Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo was recently featured on American where he spoke about growing up in a tough neighbourhood in Lagos and how his mother encouraged him to play football.

Ighalo grew up in the squalor of Ajegunle suburb of Lagos  where he started playing football. Speaking to CNN, the midfielder recalled how dangerous playing football in Ajegunle could be.

I could remember when we were training in the field, then some people stole and they ran across the field we were playing while they were being chased by the police,” the Watford striker said.

We had to run and bend down because stray bullets can hit anybody. I was so afraid that day but this is how things are there. We cannot change it.”

The 26-year-old also further revealed that his mother fuelled his love for the game of football by buying him his first football boot.

My mum bought me my first football boots. I can remember they were Copa Mundials,” the striker said.

My mum stood beside me because sometimes my dad want to spank me for going to play football.

“I come back and I don’t do my homework and all that. I can remember they would argue.”

Ighalo has been inform for Watford as they continue their run in the Premier League after returning to the top division this season.

Ighalo said he has fulfilled a life-long dream of playing in the Premier League as well as making Watford a popular club in Nigeria.

I could remember watching the Premier League on TV and I’m here today doing well and remembering everything  and thanking God that this is he same league I’,m playing now,” he said.

Because of me now, I think Nigerians support Watford a lot because there, they always support the big teams, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.”
