SPRING 2018 TREND REPORT: THE RUNWAY RUNDOWN

by editor

The spring 2018 fashion season has arrived…

Only in fashion could an event described as a ‘week’ span a full month. From September to early October 2017, the fashion world – models, editors, stylists, buyers and #influencers – caravanned from New York to London, to Milan and finally to Paris to gauge the shape of style this spring.

Some findings? The hue to embrace is lilac. Your shoulders are going to have a whole new look. And sequins are now do-able all day, any day. Here’s your guide to the spring 2018 fashion season ahead.

THE COLOUR: Lilac

Millennial pink has had its day–we’re heading into the violet hour, with designers embracing lilac for everything from tailoring (at Victoria Beckham and MaxMara) to bouncy-hemmed party dresses (Tibi). Reinvent the colour wheel now by wearing a lavender jumper with grey wool trousers or a glossy, black vinyl pencil skirt.

THE COVER-UP: Trench coats

The perennial wardrobe staple now comes in new guises. Chopped up (as at Valentino), embroidered (Alexander McQueen), patchworked (Maison Margiela)… anything goes as long as it’s not a standard issue beige mac.

THE ICON: Queens

Her Majesty popped up at Erdem, where London-based designer Erdem Moralioglu asked what would have happened if the young Elizabeth II had traded places with the jazz women of Harlem’s Cotton Club .

At Dolce & Gabbana, we met the Queen of Hearts — the Italian designers dealt a luxe deck of embellishment and light-up tiaras.

And the queens of the catwalk ruled at Versace when Donatella took a victory lap in a show that was a tribute to her late brother Gianni, accompanied by five of his favourite supermodels – who somehow looked just as smashing in 2017 as they did in the ’90s.

THE CLASH: Red with pink

The sweetest colour clash you ever did see showed up on two-tone dresses all over the runways, from Attico’s chunky stripes to Emilia Wickstead’s bows.

THE THROWBACK: Old-school logos

The biggest fashion houses have followed Calvin Klein’s lead and gone bold with their logos, plastering them on everything from tees (Versace) to trouser suits (MaxMara). Special mention goes to the Burberry check, revived by Christopher Bailey.

THE SPARKLE: Sequins for day

Jewels and sequins are no longer reserved for party season. This time around, Valentino, Bottega Veneta, Oscar de la Renta and more were out to embellish the most mundane items in our wardrobes, punctuating everything from khakis to racer back vests with a hint of glitter.

THE JEANS: Dark denim

A distinct indigo dye job washed over the collections at Tom Ford, Max Mara and Tibi, giving an early 2000s vibe to every pair of jeans on the catwalk. The smartest trick? Your denim now comes tailored, in tapered trousers and fitted blazers, making it entirely office appropriate.

THE FOCAL POINT: Shoulders

It’s all about the size, shape and silhouette of shoulders. From XXL at Gucci and completely cut-out at Christopher Kane, to wing-like at Saint Laurent, you won’t be able to shrug it off.

THE ICING ON THE CAKE: Frothy dresses

As if the candy floss colours were not enough to sweeten a spring palette, several designers have also employed its sugary textures. Silk organza was whipped into ruffles on featherweight dresses at Preen, gathered into voluminous skirts at Carolina Herrera and twisted into ball gowns at Off-White.
