Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have discovered 193 wraps of cocaine, weighing 3.4kg on a passenger, Maduewesi Samuel, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The drug, which was found in Samuel’s socks, was detected during a routine screening of passengers on an Emirates flight from Dubai. The suspect has been arrested.

According to NDLEA’s Head, Public Affairs, Ofoyeju Mitchell, the suspect, who is a commercial bus driver, was allegedly lured into the illicit drug business by a friend living outside the country.

The agency’s commander at the airport, Ahmadu Garba, said during the screening of passengers at the arrival hall, officers noticed that Samuel had some items attached to his legs.

Garba stated, “It was cleverly done but not good enough to escape our notice. When his socks were pulled down, suspected wraps of narcotics found to be cocaine, fell on the floor. He was immediately arrested for further investigation.”

In his comment on the latest arrest, the Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Col. Muhammad Abdallah (retd.), called for stringent monitoring of the Dubai-Lagos route by officers.

“This is an interesting arrest and I commend the officers for the discovery. Dubai-Lagos route is gradually gaining notoriety and we are monitoring it closely,” he stated.

Abdallah assured Nigerians that the NDLEA was working hard to prevent illicit drug production, trafficking and abuse in the country.
