Nigeria has launched its 2018 Humanitarian Response plan aimed reaching persons displaced by the insurgency in the country’s northeast region.

The 2018 plan which is in collaboration with the United Nations World Food Program was launched by the UN Humanitarian Coordinator/Resident Coordinator,. Edward Kallon.

The UN plans to raise $1.05 billion to assist an estimated 6.1 million people in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

In his remarks, Kallon said the new plan is aimed at supporting over 2.1 million women and children in crisis areas.

He also assured that Gender sensitive programs would also be strengthened.

The 2018 HRP is underpinned by a multi-year strategy representing a paradigm shift as well as a commitment by the international humanitarian community to align with the Government’s Economic and Recovery and Growth Plan (2017-2020).

It is a step towards strengthening the nexus between humanitarian, development and peace interventions, in line with the New Way of Working and commitments made at the World Humanitarian Summit in May 2016.

Nigeria has been battling Islamic sect Boko Haram for about 7 years now.

The group whose name means, “Western education is forbidden” has killed

more than 20,000 people and displaced more than 2.4 million.

The United Nations last year, said over 1.7 million persons are still displaced in Northern Nigeria.

In the report, the United Nations also said there are still 200,000 Nigerians refugees in neighboring countries.

According to the report, the main reason for this number is IDPs returning to their place of origin, refugees returning to Nigeria, and the ongoing conflict.

The UN also raised concern about the rising case of food insecurity.

It says over 5.2 million people are in need of life saving food assistance,  while it has been able to reach 3.4 million out of that number.

This means 1.5 million still need assistance in terms of food security.
